Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics Indiana University School of Medicine Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis, IN, United States
Session Description As the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology begins to recognize how structural racism drives inequitable health outcomes, it must also acknowledge the effects of structural racism on its workforce and culture. We will explore the manner in which the history of Black women’s exploitation and dehumanization continues to undergird present-day assumptions about the competence and culpability of Black women patients, trainees, and colleagues. We will consider steps that can be taken at both the interpersonal and institutional level to mitigate misogynoir to advance more equitable patient care and notions of professionalism.
