Courtney Townsel MD MSc is a tenure track Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Maryland. She earned her undergraduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science at Howard University and pursued her medical training at the University of South Florida. Following this, she completed her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at George Washington University and a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship, alongside a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Townsel assumed her role at the University of Maryland Maternal Fetal Medicine faculty in 2023 and holds the position of Director for Perinatal Research within the Department. She is recognized for her excellence in education and clinical research, with a focus on placental metabolism and transport of opioids, health disparities, and substance use disorders in pregnancy. Dr. Townsel actively contributes to fostering diversity and equity within the field, serving on various committees including the Diversity and Equity Council for the Perinatal Research Society, DEI committee for the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine and the DEI committee for the Society of Reproductive Investigation.
